Yesterday I dove more deeply into the concept of “what did not reach us,” the throughline in my life that begins not with something I received, but with something that was absent.
I have created an interactive web app to explain more about this concept. I first wanted to point out something before giving you the link to that application.
The following graphic conceptualizes that gap in the awareness among non-Native people regarding the Indigenous history of oppression in this land since the arrival of the European settlers.
The first curve displays how much work was being done in setting up and running the residential schools. The “Deep Silence” (1920 - 1960).
The “Discovery Shock “ (2021) burst that silence as the horrors of the graves at these schools broke into public awareness. This graph is one of the parts of the web application (See below).
